Blepharitis FAQs

Blepharitis is a condition that can cause a lot of discomfort and irritation. Our optometry team at StylEyes in West Des Moines answers some of the most common questions about the condition and how to treat it below.

What is blepharitis?

Blepharitis is a condition in which the upper and lower eyelids become inflamed. While there are several reasons why someone might experience inflammation of the eyelids from time to time, blepharitis is a chronic condition that causes sufferers to deal with a droopy eyelid, red eyelid, or swollen eyelid more often than not.

What causes it?

Blepharitis usually occurs when the oil glands near the eyelashes become clogged due to dandruff or something similar. Infections and bacteria can also cause inflammation, as can allergies to eye or makeup products, dry eyes, conditions like rosacea, and even mites that live on the eyelashes.

What are the symptoms of blepharitis?

In addition to having a droopy eyelid, red eyelid, or swollen eyelid, there are some other undesirable symptoms. These include flaky or crusty eyes and eyelashes, red eyes, itchy eyes, sensitivity to light, and blurred vision. You might even lose some of your eyelashes.

What treatments are available?

The first step to treatment is getting a proper diagnosis from your eye doctor through an optometry exam. During this exam, we’ll work to determine the root cause of your condition to treat it properly. Treatment will include eye care steps to follow at home, such as changing the products you use, cleaning the eyelids well, and using warm compresses. In addition to an eye care routine for home, we offer BlephEx. This treatment is utilized to remove toxins, bacteria, and other elements on your eyelids that contribute to your condition.
